WHY SCREENING MATTERS:
Undetected Challenges: Did you know that a significant number of children with communication disorders go undiagnosed? Among children with a language deficit, only about 4 out of 10 are ever identified before they enter kindergarten.
Impact on Academics: Children who start school with an untreated communication delay are at a greater risk for academic difficulties. They are 6 times more likely to have reading and spelling problems and 4 times more likely to struggle with math.
Long-Term Effects: These issues don't just disappear. Studies show that 40-60% of children with untreated speech and language delays continue to face challenges later in life, which can affect their social and emotional well-being.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON SCREENING DAY:
A licensed speech and language pathologist will be onsite at your childcare center and will interact directly with your child for approximately 15-20 minutes of their school day.
The communication screening will include 1) hearing screening via handheld, portable audiometer; 2) articulation screening at word and sentence level; 3) language screening using a standardized protocol; and, 4) a language observation via informal conversation.
After the screening, you will receive a summary report outlining each portion of the screening and the findings, as well as information for next steps if your child is found to be at risk of a communication disorder.
When your child is identified as "at risk" for a communication disorder, you may initially feel concerned or even frightened. However, a finding of "at risk" does not mean that your child has a communication disorder. It only means that further evaluation is needed to determine if a communication delay or disorder is present.
A comprehensive speech and language evaluation will involve formal and informal activities to assess your child's skills in the areas of speech sound production, receptive language, expressive language, voice, and fluency.
Before evaluation, your child may need to receive a comprehensive hearing assessment to ensure that hearing deficits are not impacting speech and language development.
With your screening report, if your child is identified as "at risk", you will receive a list of local agencies/resources to contact to schedule a comprehensive evaluation.
